My philosophy is "Art Should Be Fun!"
I am a many-faceted artist with sculpting being my first love. I enjoy all of the sculpting processes: casting, fabricating, carving, modeling, etc.
I MUST make art! I NEED to create something every day! Fortunately, I have had that privilege for most of my 70+ years.
When I make my art, the design comes first, but after that manipulating the process is where all the excitement is. Serendipity and Failure are my friends. They both inspire me to push the boundaries and continually ask the question, "What if ...?"
WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A MAQUETTE?
I was a barn painter for most of my working life. That means I am accustomed to working BIG. I think BIG. I like to make BIG sculpture.
However, BIG is difficult to ship. So I make maquettes (3D models) of my designs. The advantage of this is that I can send the maquette anywhere in the world and an enlarged sculpture can be built locally.
The maquette is intended to be used as a 3-dimensional blueprint that any competent metal fabricator can build from. This means when you buy the Right to Enlarge the work and have it done by your fabricator you control its production -- cost decisions, metal choices, size, etc. I get a fee as the designer and am no longer involved in the process.
Another advantage of a maquette is that you are not looking at a hard-to-understand sketch on a piece of paper. You view it from eye level at the height you envision the final piece to be. In other words if you want it to be 20 feet tall on a 3-foot base you make a mark on the maquette where eye level would be on the finished piece. You then lift the maquette, lining up the mark on it to your own eye level. Move it close to your eye and turn it. What you see is exactly what you would see if you were walking up to and around the enlarged piece in reality.
By using a metal maquette, the model is extremely durable and all of the measurements are accurately represented. The fabricator doesn't have to worry about a delicate balsa-wood model and can use a computerized scanner to calculate the exact sizes and patterns needed to bend the sheet metal into the final piece. It can be made from bronze, stainless steel, aluminum, steel, etc.
NOTE: Purchase of the maquette does not automatically include the Rights to Enlarge the sculpture. Only the owner of the maquette will have the ability to obtain the Rights to Enlarge - for an additional fee - at any time. So, if you have an interest in enlarging the piece, buy the maquette now to preserve the opportunity to enlarge at a later date. Please contact me ASAP.
